Our First Screening: Thank You, Pioneers!

Last week, our pioneer cohort gathered for the first screening and session in our People's Emergency Briefing series. Thank you to everyone who came along and helped us get started.

What people told us

Many of you called the film excellent, shocking, and an education, and several were surprised it hasn't yet been shown on national TV. There was a real hunger to learn more, a strong sense of connection, and an urgent need to act. Some highlighted that change has to come from the top down as well as the bottom up, and that seeing the expert evidence gathered in one place brings everything into sharp focus.

Some of the reflections that stayed with us:

  • We're not clued up enough as a nation on these issues, and we need more channels of communication and talking to each other in this age of mis/disinformation.
  • It is on us to act for our children and grandchildren. We need to "bring our friends and family along", as this affects everyone regardless of worldviews.
  • This should be shown in schools and universities, and screened across schools on inset days.
  • The economic story is so important - it's the most powerful persuader to act.
  • We should also pay attention to the devestating effect of overfishing.
  • The positive messages were important. I learnt an awful lot from this screening.
  • We need to hold politicians accountable and lobby them. How do we lobby them effectively?

That last question is a great one, and one we'll be exploring together as we go.

Who we are

Cheam Climate Action brings together like-minded individuals and groups in Cheam to raise awareness of the climate and nature crises, and to work collectively to create the conditions for our local community to thrive in the face of them.

Our first initiative is a series of People's Emergency Briefings in the local area this autumn. From there, we hope to build momentum, bringing people together to develop plans and actions we can all take to tackle and adapt to the climate and nature crises.
